Preparation strategy for paper III general studies 2:

Before I begin to explain strategies to mains general studies paper III, please go through the syllabus at least twice and try to connect the topics. Click here to download syllabus copy.

Section I – Physical Features and Natural Resources (6 units)

GEOGRAPHY OF THE WORLD:

This section of syllabus mainly covers the world physical and human geography.

To master the subject and to score high in the exam you have to be very well versed with basic geographical concepts (climatology, geomorphology concepts etc) and then one can proceed further reading of topics mentioned in the syllabus

To strengthen your basic understanding of concepts you have to start your preparation by reading the NCERT books which are listed below. And also Atlas usage is very important for geography preparation as geography is a spatial study of earth one need to be familiar with the location of the physical features, which includes rivers, mountains, valleys, volcanoes etc.

It is also very necessary to learn to draw the basic diagrams in the geography. You need to be familiar with the map of India, Karnataka and other important location and features.

GEOGRAPHY OF INDIA and GEOGRAPHY OF KARNATAKA:

Preparation for this part basically involves studying geography related to India and Karnataka. Therefore this part is all about application of concepts of physical geography and human geography. Along with this, you should also have sufficient knowledge about physical aspects (rivers, climate, physiographic regions etc), human aspects (demographic data, human development data etc) economic aspects (trade, transportation, industries, planning etc) to write the answer. Therefore memorize the basic facts related to the census, socioeconomic data from the handbook of Karnataka and the economic survey is needed. These facts are very useful to substantiate your answer.

 However  it is evident from the previous year question papers that 99% of the questions in this section are direct and can be tackled easily by covering each and every topic of the syllabus religiously to score highest marks,

Section II – Overview of Indian Constitution (7 units)

This section is all about studying Indian constitution and governance. Let us see how to prepare these topics.

The syllabus topics require us to understand the evolution of our Indian constitution, feature, provisions etc it also matters of the fact that mere memorization of these topics is not enough in mains examination one should also need to have an understanding about the essence of the topics and you must able to analyze the topics. Therefore starting your preparation from reading basic NCERT books is very important because you will get conceptual clarity only when you read NCERTs.

Civics Class 9, 10 Democratic politics.

Political science class 11 Indian constitution at work.

Political science class 11 Political theory.

Section III- Public Administration and Management – International Relations.

We once after becoming KAS officers, we will be mainly dealing with the administration and management of the public office. For a civil servant to be more effective in his job he/she must have the skills to administer.

Therefore in this section unit 1 (Private and Public Administration), unit 2 (Structure of Organisation), unit 3 (Organisational Behaviour and Management Concepts) covers basics of organization and public administration principles and theories.

 Unit 4 (Formal and informal Organisation) and unit 5 (Management Tools and Techniques) is all about management topics.

unit 6 (Administrative Reforms) is quite dynamic in nature where it covers the topics to increase the efficiencies and effectiveness of the governance and unit 7 (United Nations and Specialized Agencies) is the static unit where you have to have knowledge about the all most all international bodies.

HOW TO APPROACH:

As most the questions till now asked are the static type where they ask to test your knowledge and understanding about the verbatim in the syllabus. An aspirant must understand and memorize the at least ten to twelve points about each topic of the all seven units with multiple perspectives.
